1-Day Confined Space Competent Person Training Workshop

Based on OSHA 1910.146 & 1926 Subpart AA, this 1-day course is for supervisors and managers of workers who may need to enter a permit required confined space or monitor the safety of workers entering those spaces. It is designed to assist them in understanding OSHA requirements, creating and administering the program to assure worker safety and managing the program once it is in place. The information delivered will be customized to meet the work duties, safety equipment and company policies at your facility. It includes how to assess confined spaces and properly document the results, determination of “permit required” confined spaces, examination of methods of making the space safe to enter so that a permit is not necessary, establishment of a permitting program and continuing assessment and improvement strategies.

Training Objectives

After completing this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • 1. Understand the OSHA requirements regarding confined space entry and why they exist
  • 2. Determine and document the difference between a confined space and a ‘Permit Required’ space
  • 3. Examine the workplace to effectively assess confined space hazards
  • 4. Assess and implement procedures to mitigate hazards where possible
  • 5. Develop company-specific procedures associated with preparation for entry
  • 6. Document and communicate the duties of the entrant, monitor and management team
  • 7. Select and establish a maintenance program for air sampling gear (if required by entry permit)
  • 8. Provide orientation and guidance to workers who will enter and monitor these spaces
  • 9. Establish procedures for regular and emergency channels of communication with management
  • 10. Develop an internal or external rescue plan, including selection of non-entry rescue gear if needed
  • 11. Assess the effectiveness of the entire program and implement changes as needed

NOTE: Training for this course does not involve an actual entry of a confined space or simulated response to an emergency, unless otherwise arranged. This is not a class in rescue techniques.
