This course will prepare learners to competently administer a training and certification process for operators of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms such as scissor lifts, bucket trucks and boom lifts. The class information will be specific to the types of equipment in use, activities anticipated on the elevated platform, personal fall arrest or worker positioning devices and the company policies in effect.

The course will be specific to the vehicles used in the workplace and the work being performed. The learner will understand design features of the equipment and how these affect stability and operator safety, how these machines elevate workers, most frequent accidents involving the machines, how to assess hazards in the workplace prior to operation, wind and weather hazards, equipment and driving surface inspection techniques and how activities on the platform may affect workers on the ground. The learner will understand the use of vehicle controls for moving and raising the platform, fueling and battery charging safety, traffic considerations and emergency actions that must be planned for.
Aerial lift operators should be trained before being assigned to operate an aerial lift, before being assigned to operate a new type of aerial lift, when conditions at the worksite change, after an incident or near-miss involving an aerial lift, and whenever inadequacies in an employee’s level of knowledge or skill indicate that additional training may be necessary to ensure safety.
The responsibility to communicate with ground workers and supervisors will be emphasized, along with the required training information for non-operators who are elevated using the platform. All participants will demonstrate competence in operation of each piece of equipment that that will be expected to use on the job.
