1/2 -Day Fall Protection Authorized Person Training

This course provides information for workers who may be at risk of falls in General Industry and who use fall protection equipment or work on ladders. The information delivered will be customized to meet the work duties, safety equipment and company policies at your facility. It covers how falls occur on both level and raised areas, effects of falls, general principles of fall prevention, mobile equipment that elevates workers, use of fall protection equipment and how workers should modify their behavior and activities in areas where a fall is possible. The information will cover the use of guardrails and railings, safety on stairs and ramps, loading dock considerations, how worker positioning devices differ from fall arrest systems, parts of a personal fall arrest system, determination of anchorage points, inspection and maintenance of equipment and devices, ladder safety, rope descent systems and response to a fall event.

Training Objectives

After completing this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the risk areas where falls are more likely to occur
  • Determine what behaviors can cause worker falls to be more likely
  • Explain how fixed structures can prevent fall hazards and which types are adequate
  • Define what areas of their workplace require fall protection assessment
  • Perform worker-level area inspection and report to management
  • Differentiate between fall prevention and personal fall arrest systems
  • Know how fall arrest systems are used and basic information on the different types
  • Understand how to identify approved anchor (tie-off) points
  • Select fall protection on scissor lifts, boom lifts, bucket trucks and order pickers
  • Demonstrate how to don, adjust and doff their fall protection gear
  • Competently perform a worker inspection of fall protection equipment
  • Understand the effects of a fall when wearing a personal fall arrest system
  • Explain how to avoid the behaviors that cause falls from ladders
  • Know the types of ladders and how they should be used
  • Perform inspection of a ladder and demonstrate its proper setup and use
  • Know how to respond if a fall incident results in impact, and why
