Job Hazard Analysis JSA / Job Safety Analysis JSA

A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) or Job Safety Analysis (JSA) identifies how to perform a task step-by-step by identifying the hazards associated with the task and outlining the controls to mitigate the hazards to protect the worker.

Work Process

Developing Job Hazard Analysis JHAs and JSAs is performed by safety field technicians familiar with identifying hazards in the workplace. Software is used to collect the data and develop the procedures.  The steps for developing the JHAs are:

  • Identify the work or tasks that need a Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Observe the work being done by one or more workers.
  • Break the job down into small tasks or steps.
  • Identify the hazards and potential hazards for each step.
  • Develop the control measure that should be used to eliminate or minimize the hazards in the following order:
    • Elimination
    • Substitution
    • Engineering Controls
    • Administrative Controls
    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Develop the Job Hazard Analysis procedure using the steps, hazards and controls, including written instructions and photos.
  • Identify any training that is required to address the hazards, operate the the equipment or perform the task.
  • Review JHA with employees performing the work for accuracy.
